What is mindful photography and is it really an accessible way to achieve a calmer mind ?
We are going to tell you from our experience, it is!
Mindfulness involves the practice of paying attention to the present moment and being more aware of our thoughts and feelings.
It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone finds this easy and for some individuals, the pressure to achieve mindfulness can lead to increased anxiety.
Moreover, hearing about the positive experiences of others can inadvertently add more pressure, causing people to question themselves.
We would like to share with you our experience and let you know there is a way to achieve calm and you were possibly already doing it.

Mindful Photography is simply using photography to slow down and take notice of your self and surroundings.
I wasn’t sure whether to use the word mindfulness in the title of my business, Mindful Photography UK.
As I was discussing it with some friends a few years ago I certainly saw a few eyes roll. Some said to me, “should we really just be sticking the word mindful onto, well …everything”? Others pointed out that all photography is mindful in its process, how is your process going to be any different?

Mindful Photography encourages us to remove judgement.
What does that mean?
We don’t focus on our skill level or ability; we simply enjoy the process and positively let go of any doubts about whether our image is good enough. We create small, safe groups of like-minded individuals and provide support and encouragement for each other.

I have actually been doing mindful photography all my life, without even realising it and I suspect you probably have too. In our forthcoming blogs and Facebook posts I am going to share some more details about how it has helped me, about the wonderful people who attend our sessions and the positive things they say about the process.
What happens in a session?
In a session we help you build confidence in your visual literacy, we set short themes and tasks and we work in a really inclusive way so that you feel safe and supported.

Here is a lovely email I received from a recent participant at our Carers Plus Yorkshire session with this beautiful image she took at Dean Road Cemetery.
“It was lovely to meet you on Monday and I enjoyed our walk after getting over my initial anxiety. It was a big step for me to take photos……
…. I quite like that the two tall trees lead my eyes towards the middle tree and the gravestones make the picture more interesting than just a tree shot.
many thanks for introducing me to such a nice activity”.
We also offer online workshops – you can try one week of calm with me
