Engaging with Families in Eastfield Scarborough Through Photography

Still life of fruit

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of delivering another session under our PACT cash for causes funding in Eastfield, marking our penultimate event aimed at supporting the community’s wellbeing. The focus this time was on families, where we guided a learning journey to explore portraiture techniques.

Lego still life

We started by discussing what makes a good portrait. Participants shared their thoughts on the essential elements, such as expression, composition, blur and we worked out how to do this on our phone cameras using the portrait mode. It was heartwarming to see children and families engaged and eager to share their perspectives.

With a clear understanding of portrait essentials, we tried it out. Parents and children worked side by side, offering tips and encouragement to one another. One suggestion that stood out was to change the background to enhance the portraits further. This supportive environment made the session even more enjoyable with laughter and onlookers from the Eastfield community.

One of the highlights was the photography created by a talented six-year-old. The results were nothing short of inspiring. Have a look below!

A vibrant and colorful portrait by a six-year-old child, showcasing his young talent.

We then continued looking at the rule of thirds before moving onto edible still life!

It’s truly rewarding to see children and families come together, not just to learn a skill, but to share laughter, stories, and create lasting memories.

Our time in Eastfield was a beautiful reminder of how much strength there is in community and that places like More than Books are at the heart of that. Weโ€™re looking forward to our final event and exhibition and continuing to support the wonderful people in this community!
