Exploring the everyday with Mindful Photography UK

The programme offers over 50 events, many free, organised by the local community and focussing on both local and global issues: from films to informative talks, from dancing to tennis, from creative workshops to yoga, from music and poetry to photography, from exhibitions to clothes swaps and activist events โ€“ and more. Do check out the full programme on www.yorkwomen.org.uk and join us in celebration and hope. We are so excited and privileged to welcome Dr Neil Gibson, author of โ€œTherapeutic Photographyโ€, as a fellow company Director at Mindful Photography UK CIC. Neil is an academic and practitioner, specialising in social work and therapeutic practice, from Scotland, UK. He has been involved in research into the therapeutic use of photography since 2014 and has run a number of groups for clients and practitioners on therapeutic photography techniques. He currently works alongside the Scottish Government, specialising in social work policy and practice, and is developing knowledge on the use of photography in pluralistic therapy. I was lucky enough to be one of a handful of students to be trained by Dr Neil Gibson, in 2023. The Therapeutic Photography postgraduate course was the first of its kind in the world to offer an academic qualification to support professionals wishing to use photography in their therapeutic practice. Neil describes Therapeutic Photography as โ€œthe structured, guided practice of producing images to explore perceptions, relationships, interpretation of life events and societal issues with a clear, defined outcome for the participantโ€. Internationally, he has travelled to Kenya to research resilience, with communities using photographs to explore issues during periods of political upheaval. Thank you Neil for joining us and we are really looking forward to see what the future brings. Mike is our Company Director and has been with Mindful Photography UK since we became incorporated in 2022. Before this, Mike was a student of Mindful Photography, and I approached him because I felt he truly understood the process of slowing down, taking notice, and nurturing awareness. I first met Mike whilst I was working in adult education, soon after we met, we went into the Covid 19 Pandemic. Mike realised the importance of not just mindful photography but of connection. We were so glad when we agreed to become a Director. Olivia tells us about the benefits of Mindful Photography Benjamin Zephaniah What is mindful photography without the people?
