In 2023 I had the pleasure of contributing to the world’s first student symposium in Therapeutic Photography. This was hosted by Dr Neil Gibson and was opened by one of the earliest pioneers of Photo-Therapy and Therapeutic Photography; Judy Weiser. Slow down, take notice and nurture awareness with Rebecca

Mindful Photography UK with Glynis of Kyra Women’s Project

“After discussions with Rebecca, she offered a workshop to members of Kyra Women’s Project which is a small Women’s independent charity in York without cost or charge.
Rebecca’s Mindful Photography Workshop has proven to be a profoundly valuable and enriching experience for the women supported by Kyra Women’s Project. Designed with empathy, creativity, and accessibility in mind, the workshop offered a gentle and empowering pathway to self-expression, reflection, and connection—particularly important for women experiencing mental health challenges, low self-esteem, and social isolation. Our members all felt nervous at the beginning of the workshop, however, after introductions of the group and theme we went out to nearby gardens and a walk along the river through York, coming back and exploring stories, and images the change within the group was tangible with a lively discussion to conclude.

Mindful Photography to support Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing

The mindful approach to photography—focusing on observation, stillness, and presence—created a safe space for participants to slow down and connect with their surroundings. Many women reported a calming effect, with the practice of mindful image-making helping to alleviate anxiety and intrusive thoughts. By encouraging women to notice beauty in everyday moments, the workshop subtly introduced techniques that support grounding and emotional regulation.

Mindful Photography to Build Confidence

Rebecca’s inclusive facilitation style enabled women of all abilities to feel welcome and capable. Photography—free from judgment or the need for prior skill—allowed participants to take creative risks and celebrate their unique perspectives. Over the course of the workshop many women began to share their images and reflections more openly, indicating a growing sense of pride and self-assurance.

Mindful Photography to combat loneliness

Perhaps most notably, the workshop fostered a strong sense of community. The shared act of mindful photography led to meaningful conversations, mutual encouragement, and the building of new friendships. For women who may feel disconnected or alone, these social interactions provided a lifeline—a reminder that they are seen, heard, and supported.

Recommendation of Mindful Photography UK

Rebecca’s workshop has made a significant and lasting contribution to the wellbeing of the women involved. Its benefits extend far beyond the sessions themselves, equipping participants with tools for mindfulness, self-expression, and connection that they can continue to use in daily life. We would highly recommend Rebecca’s mindful photography workshop as a powerful, accessible intervention for women facing mental health challenges, low confidence, or social isolation”.
