What is SAD?

โ€ฆ.And how I have realised that observing the weather can be quite enlightening!

I have experienced symptoms of SAD or seasonal affective disorder most of my life. But now I manage the symptoms through three or four strategies that work for me:

  1. I have a light box which I have switched on when Iโ€™m working, this helps my sleep patterns so much as well !
  2. I go to bed on time reducing coffee and alcohol and I always drink lots of water ( donโ€™t forget this can be warm water with a slice of lemon, water doesnโ€™t need to be boring ! )
  3. When I can, I take daily walks and find a routine that works for me
  4. Of course โ€ฆ I do mindful photography. Even if I am not taking out my camera or smart phone I am looking all the time.

For example, look at our weather this January; lately, it’s been drizzly and grey more or less every day, affecting many people’s moods. Psychological studies reveal that human moods can be significantly influenced by weather patterns.

But, the other day, I noticed how the gloomy backdrop made the majestic oak trees stand out like pieces of art!

Iโ€™m asking you now, could we reframe the weather? Even on dull days, the dark and dreary sky highlights the intricate details of nature all around us.

So this month, I encourage you to step outside, find a lone tree, photograph it and truly appreciate its beauty.

Take it one step further โ€ฆ Can you identify that tree? Use a book, an app, or even the built-in identifier on your iPhone to learn more about it! Let’s celebrate nature, no matter the weather!

I did a little bit of internet searching and reading around SAD and thought Iโ€™d share it with you here.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is characterised by a range of symptoms that usually occur during specific seasons, most commonly in winter. Symptoms can vary from person to person, but commonly include:

1. Depression: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness.

2. Loss of Interest: Decreased interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.

3. Fatigue: Increased fatigue or low energy, making it hard to get through the day.

4. Sleep Disturbances: Changes in sleep patterns, including oversleeping (hypersomnia) or difficulty waking up.

5. Changes in Appetite: Increased cravings for carbohydrates or sugar, leading to weight gain in some cases.

6. Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.

7. Irritability: Heightened feelings of irritability or frustration.

8. Social Withdrawal: A tendency to avoid social interactions and withdraw from friends and activities.

9. Physical Symptoms: Some may experience physical symptoms like headaches, stomach issues, or a general feeling of malaise.

By combining these approaches, individuals with SAD can find relief and improve their emotional well-being during the challenging seasons. Always suggest seeking guidance from healthcare professionals for personalised support.
