Mindful Photography UK are very proud to be working alongside Dr Neil Gibson, https://www.rgu.ac.uk/news/news-2022/4784-rgu-launches-therapeutic-photography-course-which-helped-covid-bereaved-group Senior Lecturer in Therapeutic Photography of Robert Gordon University and Megan Ribbens, Child Life Specialist and Therapeutic Photography Facilitator, South Africa, to demonstrate the impact of our work in communities, we cannot wait to share more about this over the coming months.

Wellbeing in the workplace

We are developing our work in bringing Mindful Photography sessions to work places. Our recent work at IDAS was really well received and we have since had enquiries to develop these sessions with our other large organisations. If your staff would welcome even as little as 90 minutes out their working week to experience a Mindful Photography session drop us an email at rebecca@mindfulphotography.org.uk

Finally we are so excited to attend the Scarborough Whitby Ryedale Community Mental Transformation Health Event at Scarborough Rugby Club, Scalby YO13 0NL on 20th February 2024. We will be there 1-3pm celebrating the outcomes we achieved last year working with Kick Rexi Out, Age UK, Social Prescribers, Women’s Institute, Next Steps and Foundation.

Mindful Photography UK during October

“I learned to open my mind to new things, I got great motivation to look and observe the everyday objects and sights and surroundings I feel totally at ease and very supported”

It’s been so invigorating running the October groups, we’ve delivered at, Scampston Hall, Age UK, York Mind, Our City Hub and the York Army Museum. Our free Facebook based Mindful Photography Project is now beyond 200 members and attracting more and more people who want to slow down and take notice of their surroundings.

Before we share what we’ve been doing have you ever appreciated the beauty of komorebi?

This time of year is an absolute favourite for Mindful Photographers, the sunlight is low and if we’re lucky we can capture those magical images where the sunlight shines through the leaves in the most inviting way. The Japanese call this KOMOREBI a word for which there is no real English synonym which surely makes it even more enchanting?

We’ve just finished delivering on our (Community Mental Health Transformation Fund) Ryedale project. We delivered 16 mindful photography sessions across Ryedale working with partners at Next Steps in Norton, Kirbymoorside, Age UK, Eating Disorder Support Organisation Kick Rexi Out, the Anchorage (NHS) Whitby and the Women’s Institute.

We’ve started back working with York Mind again and completed two sessions. We used our first two sessions to build confidence and get used to the format of a Mindful Photography UK session… we do a lot of walking! We loved exploring the York Bid Ghosts and opening our minds to creativity and curiosity.

What’s on…..

Just looking ….at the Dent Village Museum and Heritage Centre

Mindful Photography UK are a community interest company; that means we are a limited company which exists primarily to benefit a community or social purpose. We are made up four Directors; Ian, Christine, Mike and myself, Rebecca.

Recent exhibition at York Explore celebrating women and their collective Mindful Photography experience

We have decided that we would like to work with local communities, predominately, but not limited to North Yorkshire and we would like to reach out to people who are navigating the criminal justice system, survivors of domestic abuse unpaid carers, armed service personnel and their families and people who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

Our work is increasing at a fast pace and over the last few weeks we have delivered to a large number of people in our local area; probation charities, mental health resource centres, community hubs and marginalised communities within the city of York.

This participant loved the “ looking” he also enjoyed showing the others how to try different cameras
You can try mindful photography on different devices

The photograph below was taken by one participant who wanted to illustrate how it felt to feel unconnected within his community. He was able to share this image with us with sparked conversation around how we feel when we are unconnected.

This image formed part of a discussion group which fed into an article which I wrote for the John Muir Trust last month about human connection and self-esteem. You can read more here.

Permission granted from participant 2023.

After people have taken part in Mindful Photography UK projects they are invited into the Mindful Photography Project online; this offers the opportunity to stay connected and continue to share images with a monthly theme.

Back at Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors

So the last time we were working with Age UK in Scarborough it was in the very cold months of January. Every session was filled with participants and we ventured out, noticing details we might not have seen before. We built lasting friendships, we learnt new skills and the group reported an improved sense of wellbeing.

We created this collage together.

Thanks to funding from the Community Mental Health Transformation Fund, we are able to return on Monday 9th and 16th October between 10am and 1pm.

You can sign up for one or both sessions.

First International Therapeutic Photography Student Symposium 28 April 2023

On Friday I take part in the first International student symposium hosted by Robert Gordon University Course Leader Dr Neil Gibson; an online event which will be introduced by the renowned expert and early pioneer of Therapeutic Photography Judy Weiser.

Presentations will be offered by myself and other qualifying students from the Post Graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Photography course. These will explore key themes which emerged from our learning and we will highlight opportunities where we have applied these techniques in our own practices.

The last time I looked there were only 7 tickets left but keep an eye out in case there are any cancellations.

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/international-therapeutic-photography-symposium-tickets-507718538817

Presenters include –

  • Rebecca Rowan – England
  • Jean-Philippe Gauvrit – France
  • Fi Tunnicliff – New Zealand
  • Alison Beaumont – Canada
  • Megan Ribbens – South Africa
  • Diana Nazareth – Canada
  • Adrian Flint – Thailand
  • Caron Toshiko – Indonesia
  • Maria Chalari – Greece
  • Ivana Dostálová – Czech Republic

I will be introducing work which I have undertaken whilst working with learners at York Mind as well as with Annabelle, a survivor of domestic abuse. All of these students still continue to use therapeutic photography techniques to help support themselves and I cannot wait to share their images and outcomes on the evening.

“The most profound difference the sessions had for me was that in such a short space of time when I would go on my daily walks I actually saw and felt my surroundings as I stopped to take pictures”, Annabelle.

Mindful Photography at Directions in York

I’m really enjoying the work that Mindful Photography UK CIC are doing at Directions; part of Inspire North – a place where everyone matters and the focus is on building brighter futures for people.

This work is funded by North Yorkshire Sport Together Fund and is aimed at tackling inequalities in physical activity in North Yorkshire.

Mindful Photography does just that it encourages people to get together and share their love of the visual image and the storytelling that comes out of that – and, before you know it we have walked three or four miles together and appreciated what is on our doorstep! People in the group say they’d feel silly going out taking photos alone but in a group it feels safe.

These sessions are for participants who would like to take positive steps and support their own mental health.

Having spoken to the group they are telling me that they find the sessions calming and are enjoying the process.

We are only half way through our pilot project but already, through demand we are creating an interim exhibition on 17th April for family, friends, funders and supporters.

Thank you so much to Directions, Barley Hall, Everyman Cinema and The Bar Convent Museum who have been so welcoming.

I can’t wait to share the images from the day but meanwhile here is a sneak preview of what to expect

Outcomes from a session in Kirbymoorside

I was lucky enough to deliver some Mindful Photography technique to participants attending Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre last week.

This session was funded by the Community Mental Health Transformation Small Grants fund to support people experiencing mental health difficulty in Ryedale.

I attended the regular walk and had the opportunity to talk with the eighteen people who had attended.

We began with a short talk about what mindful photography is and the associated benefits to health and then we explored the task which was to look carefully for natural lines we saw in the landscape.

I spoke with one man who had a visual impairment, he told me he loved listening out for the water, the footsteps, cows calling to each other and the sheep. He could hear people talking and speaking excitedly about their photographs and it made him feel calm too.

James and Pete have submitted some images to share with you from the morning.

James looked for lines in the paths, tree lines and the brook

Images kindly submitted by Pete

I am pleased to say that the funding will continue and in July I will be back to Norton to deliver more sessions. For more information please email rebecca@mindfulphotography.org.uk or ring 07709325823

Millfield Woods, Easingwold

Who is this project for?

The sessions are open to anyone over the age of 18 in the Easingwold or surrounding area. All you need is something to take an image on; a smartphone, tablet or camera.

The sessions will consist of a short photographic walk around the town and end with an optional hot drink.

Cost

We don’t want finances to be a barrier to sessions.

Monthly tickets are ‘pay what you can afford,’ with a suggested donation of £3:50 or £5.00 per session.

Free tickets are available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

The project will consist of seven monthly walks and continue in a private online sharing forum between meetings.

Some quotes from previous projects in North Yorkshire:

I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s been a really good experience. I would do it again in my own time.

I feel fresh and rested, I feel connected with other people, I have learnt new things, I feel determined.

Mindful Photography UK at the Recycle Project CIC

Last week I was joined by more participants who wanted to experience Mindful Photography in a totally unique setting; the Recycle Project CIC, Hazel Court, York where an astounding 240 tonnes are saved from landfill each year!

Images were taken by participants during the project

This 3 hour workshop looked at some simple techniques to enhance visual literacy before exploring the warehouse.

The surroundings allowed us to explore stories together in a safe environment. Mindful Photography is part of a wider process called Therapeutic Photography where the main outcomes relate to enhancing self esteem; we were able to explore our own narratives through focussing on the objects we discovered.

I am there again for the final workshop next February, spaces are limited so get your ticket here!

Only a couple of places left…

I’m so excited to be working with the Recycle Project CIC ♻️ in York.

Join our unique project linking Mindful Photography and environmental sustainability

We were connected by York CVS who thought we were well placed to work together.

There’s only a couple of places left, come and join us this coming Tuesday at 10am ~ midday.

The Recycle project CIC have a fantastic ethos which you can read here –

“At The Recycle Project, our mission is to turn waste into a positive, and recycle as many goods as possible.

We travel across North Yorkshire, recovering all kinds of goods and offer them back to the community in many ways.

Saving the planet and helping the community is our commitment, and we can always use extra support.”

We have the opportunity to take small portable items from the shop floor and bring them back to the workshop to photograph. Come and learn some mindful photography techniques and see how we can enhance our story telling using these items.

Tickets only £5.98

Mindful Photography workshops

We are taking advantage of the beautiful colours we have seen recently and really appreciating getting out and about in groups. The learners at York Mind are coming to the end of their six week course in Mindful Photography and have all decided to sign up again for another six week block. This is a testament to the benefits of Mindful Photography; and how the process can build up a close group dynamic. The techniques can be adopted at any given point in time, I remind people that you can try it anywhere. The real pleasure is in the sharing of images and learning from each other.

Image yesterday from the Homestead Park

I had some lovely feedback at the end of the course one participant said – The workshop was ….

“Grounding, inspirational and builds confidence”.

November 2022

The next workshops at York Mind are filling up fast but you can email activities@yorkmind.org.uk for a place on the waiting list.

Images taken at an ATI workshop in Thirsk last week

We have also enjoyed workshops in Thirsk and even managed to try some geo-caching the other day – and why not?! I love it when a session goes off on a little tangent and learners tell me more about themselves. Action Towards Inclusion is a project to help support learners with the confidence and being part of a project will do just that.

So what’s happening now ?

I met up with Bradley a couple of weeks ago from The Recycle Project CIC in York https://therecycleprojectcic.com/ and am really pleased to be delivering a session soon. It is a simple introduction to Mindful Photography and we have the inspiration of all the wonderful finds which have been salvaged from York’s local landfill sites.

Green social prescribing at Scampston Hall

I was so lucky to be invited to the Carers Plus Yorkshire Wellbeing Day at Scampston Hall, near Malton, Yorkshire.

A very rainy but rewarding day!

Whilst I was there I had the pleasure of finally meeting Antony Hurd of Hey Smile Foundation and we were able to talk about the benefits of Mindful Photography.

We discussed how anyone can access this style of photography; any age, any skill, any place, in any weather and with any camera. The art is in the looking and the slowing down.

Who are the Hey Smile Foundation?

The Humber and North Yorkshire Green Social Prescribing programme is one of seven ‘test and learn’ sites in England that will examine how health and care services, working with communities and local organisations, can connect more people with nature and nature-based activities to improve their mental health and wellbeing. The programme is funded by: DEFRA; NHS England; NHS Improvement; the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities; the National Academy for Social Prescribing; Natural England; Sport England; The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities; and the Department of Health and Social Care. The programme is being run by the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership through our Lead Provider, HEY Smile Foundation. (Taken from Newsletter)

A distant memory

Well my holiday to Rannoch Moor which was only a few weeks past now seems like a lifetime ago!

Now back to ‘real life’, I often have to use my own Mindful Photography techniques to calm down, de-stress and get some perspective.

Rannoch Loch a couple of weeks ago

Did you know we have a free Mindful Photography Project running in Facebook groups?

This month our theme is ‘spectacular to me’. No judgement, just the capture of those beautiful little moments you notice everyday – and yes they are worth going back to photograph no matter how busy you are.

You can find the Facebook community group here ….

https://linktr.ee/MindfulPhotographyUK

In the group I set the theme once a month and members find the topic pinned to the top of the page, so if life gets busy, they can always pick up and rejoin when they want to – no pressure.

Beach at Loch Laiden

With facebook’s new feature to post anonymously this means that members feel safe to post ( I see the post and approve it first ). This is a welcoming, friendly group so please do come over and join us. The community initially began as a local group in a market town north of York after a course called the Five Days in Between to bridge the gap between Christmas and New Year when many people can feel isolated. It has now attracted members from all round the UK.

I have a new course starting in September called Open the Door. It is a simple way to slow down, take notice and feel part in something without too much commitment. Over the five weeks you can dip in and out when you want to. It’s online with optional 1:1 phone calls, zooms or meet ups if you’re local.

This will be the third time I’ve delivered it and many people in this group have enjoyed and benefitted.

End of a wonderful project

I’d love to share a video from the recent Mindful Photography UK Project Open the Door.

I delivered the initial project during lockdown whilst teaching photography online and it was of course also strongly influenced by my favourite poem by Czech poet Miroslav Holub.

You can see some of the participant images in this short video here

Click below ⬇️

I’m running this same workshop twice again this year in September and November and you can book here ⬇️

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/open-the-door-a-mindful-photography-project-tickets-210680810977

Thank you to all the participants for allowing me to share their images.

Go and open the door.
Maybe outside there’s
a tree, or a wood,
a garden,
or a magic city.

Go and open the door.
Maybe a dog’s rummaging.
Maybe you’ll see a face,
or an eye,
or the picture
of a picture.

Go and open the door.
If there’s a fog
it will clear.

Go and open the door.
Even if there’s only
the darkness ticking,
even if there’s only
the hollow wind,
even if
nothing
is there,
go and open the door.

At least
there’ll be
a draught.

Yorkshire Living

I really enjoyed talking to Catherine Turnbull of Yorkshire Living Magazine in preparation for an article she wrote about Mindful Photography UK.

Yorkshire Living magazine
January Edition

In preparation for the article Catherine actually took her camera out to Spurn Point and tried some of the techniques I had suggested to her.

Alternatively you could look for shapes in a city

Catherine said she really enjoyed the process and could really see the benefits to wellbeing. She enjoyed recording the difference between the past and present by using photography which of course allows us to nurture our own awareness of the here and now.

Thank you Catherine and Yorkshire Living magazine for allowing me to share this wonderful process.

What to buy for the person who has everything !

I’m now taking bookings for two online mindful photography projects – an ideal Christmas gift for the person who has it all?

I always find it hard to buy presents for my mum. I’ve realised what makes her happy is to spend time with her daughters and grandchildren. Early this year I devised “Open the Door” – a five week online project exploring poetry and photography. My mum took part in the pilot course and throughly enjoyed it. So much so, she now incorporates mindful photography into her everyday.

I have set three start dates for a rerun of Open the Door you can join here ⬇️

https://linktr.ee/MindfulPhotographyUK

Or, if you would like a new year treat, maybe you’d enjoy an online course based around mindful photography and incorporating some simple composition techniques? I’m working with Helmsley Art Centre to deliver a five week online week project ending in an optional coffee and chat at Helmsley. Booking link below ⬇️

It is all part of the “getting outdoors” theme – it might be another lockdown activity to lift spirits ?

Recent project with Action Towards Inclusion

I’ve just finished a 2 month project working with Action Towards Inclusion and WEA. This was an online delivery course and we were united across Yorkshire via zoom. At the end one of the participants created the most beautiful quote which she shared with the group. You can watch their short video here which showcases some of their work. They all say they will continue using photography to support their wellbeing in the future.

Fitting in

We have spent two weeks in the Mindful Photography Project exploring the theme ‘fitting in’ which has meant quite different things to different members

https://www.facebook.com/groups/682148979380076/

Fitting in within the life cycle or fitting the seeds in ?

If this is something that you’d enjoy come and join the Mindful Photography Project in Facebook groups. The topics are updated regularly and members are encouraged to provide their own themes if they wish. This friendly group for people to explore mindful photography is soon to celebrate its first year. It was initially set up as a group for local people but we now enjoy the company of people from all over the world 🌎

Summary of the recent “Open the Door” project – by Mindful Photography UK, October 2021

I recently delivered, my “Open the Door” project; a unique five week online project to help support participants experience mindful photography techniques and feel even more connected with nature.

Taken by Jo

We met online to discuss the format of the project and explore what the participants really wanted to gain from their time together.

80% of participants said they had signed up to support their wellbeing, increase their daily exercise and to connect more with nature

Taken by Jo

“My main goals for this course are increasing my ability to be ‘in the moment’ and using photography as a means of creative self-expression and reflection.”

Beth, September, 2021

The course explored photography inspired by poetry. The final week we looked at the poem ‘Fear’ by Khalil Gibran.

If this is something you’d like to try I am going to run this course again in the new year. Drop me an email at rebecca@mindfulphotography.org.uk for more details – course prices start at £34.99 per person for online delivery.

 Fear –

It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.

She looks back at the path she has travelled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.

And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.

But there is no other way.
The river can not go back.

Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.

The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that’s where the river will know
it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.

Khalil Gibran

“I found Rebecca and the group to be supportive, inspirational, gentle, and thoughtful. I will take the suggestions and poems with me for future use and reflection. Thoroughly enjoyed being part of it . A lovely experience.”

An introduction to Mindful Photography with York Mind

I have just spent five weeks delivering an introduction to Mindful Photography UK online course with local charity, York Mind.

In our final week we prepared some flowers and leaves within ice cubes.

“I’ve not really been feeling very well emotionally and the course has helped me focus on something other than my thoughts and feelings, but also allowed me to find alternative ways to express them “

Here are some of the images taken by the group :

Working with Leeds University

I had a great opportunity to work with students from Leeds University as I shared my love of mindful photography. We started off by trying to define what it meant to us and then observed how that definition changed throughout the session. I am really hoping that they will continue on their own and maybe start their own mindful photography community. Many thanks to the I Belong project which recognises the need to support our students whilst they are away from their homes and families.

Mindful Photography Scavenger Hunt at Easter Time

Over the Easter weekend Mindful Photography UK invited people to take part in a simple photographic scavenger hunt inspired by the colours of the rainbow.

The collaborative project made up of 18 participant’s work – thank you to everyone who took part 🌈

One participant wrote to me afterwards with some lovely words :

This has been such a lovely project to do over Easter, a way of connecting with other like minded people and pausing to focus for a short time on things we might otherwise never stop to notice. Thank you for your company and support”

I Belong – Leeds University

I am really pleased to be shortlisted to deliver a wellbeing project to Leeds University Students as part of the I Belong initiative this year. The purpose of this is to support students strengthen their connections on campus.

What better way to start your mindful photography journey than by exploring the vibrant city of Leeds with its stunning architecture, bustling market, green spaces and fascinating waterways.

This article below from the University outlines our human need for connection. The “I Belong Creative Connections” programme is co-produced by student members, who select the sessions they’d like to participate in from the shortlist and I cannot wait to meet them.

Just listening

Finding Simplicity

This week I asked the members of my current community photography project to take their mobile phones with them on their daily walks and simply listen. They will be recording what they hear on their mobile devices and combining the audio file with a suitable image from the last six months of the photography project. The project is coming to an end soon and they are busily editing their images ready for the final collaboration. You can click on the audio file below to hear birdsong from a local walk.

The Five Days In Between

Reducing social isolation between Christmas and New Year

Between Christmas and New Year 20 participants in Easingwold were invited to take place in a participatory photography project to explore the connection between wellbeing and nature. The project allowed participants the opportunity to remain anonymous if they so wished and only communicate via sharing images. Each day, participants of varying photographic experience, opened a new brightly coloured envelope containing a daily photography prompt. The task was to be undertaken within the house, on a daily walk or using an existing photo. At the end of the project, the participants reported an improvement in their wellbeing and exercise levels which was well timed to take them through the Five Days in Between.

A quote from a participant:

“Also to my surprise Rebecca, I am thoroughly enjoying doing this – it does make you look and think”

Shed Some Light On It

I have loved working in collaboration with Helmsley Art Centre in January whilst we invited seven participants to literally come and ‘Shed Some Light On It’ throughout the dark month of January. We discovered that if you look close enough, January is actually full of beauty and if you just try to strip it all back, there is so much to see right there on the doorstep.

One of the participants wrote about her experience in her blog which you can read here https://www.sarahbanks.me/journal/micro-adventures. She talks about her favourite task in the first week where we literally stopped and observed. We found our view, the place where we decided there and then we would return to each week throughout the project. This might be a view that we feel grounds us or provides some comfort. I encouraged the group to explore all of their senses and Sarah even managed to enjoy a drink whilst she was there.

As facilitator I always take part in the projects myself. This view above has provided a lot of support to me during Covid 19 lockdown and I have visited it on a daily basis, nearly every day now for a year. Going back and revisiting a scene can feel very secure and reassuring. Noticing how its beauty can change with the light and prevailing weather conditions is a subtle reminder about our daily lives and how we react to situations.

Shed some light on it was a fantastic project and the participants spoke about the impact afterwards;

“it gave me confidence in my creativity, helped me with everyday motivation and even spilled over positively into other areas of my life…”

“It made me less impatient”

“I let things go of things that didn’t matter that much, I felt more resilient”
